Nicole Gets Insane

Nicole took part in a 60 day Insanity challenge and had absolutely killed it!  Read her story below.

Nicole- Insanity

Hi! My name is Nicole, I am a 25 year old mother of two girls ages 8 and 2. I had always been very petite and fit. I was extremely active all throughout middle and high school as part of the cheerleading squad and color guard.

After I had my first child unexpectedly at 17 years old that all changed. I went from being 100 pounds to 115, then 6 years later I had my second child and went from 115 to 125. I hated the way I looked in my clothes and that I always had to worry about what I could not wear.

Finally I decided it was time to make a change, I started to attend a kickboxing class my local fit club Dance Co. From there I was invited to join a Insanity Challenge that my coach was hosting. I thought “Why not?” I had always seen the infomercials and thought it looked like a good workout.

So I joined at 120 pounds hoping to lose 5 pounds. 60 days later I had lost 13 pounds and a total of 18 inches! I am so proud of myself. Now with the help of my beach body coach Kathy and my mentor Tony , I have so much motivation to continue to get in the best shape I can be in.

I am now planning on starting an Insanity Asylum Challenge this June 18th 2012, and have also signed up as a Independent Beach body Coach. I am so excited to start the next chapter in my transformation story. I just want to pass on and share this incredible gift of fitness and health to everyone I meet. I truly believe it is contagious and well worth it.

Kim Dominates Chalean Extreme

Kim just finished the 90 day Diva Challenge and her results are awesome.  In just 90 days using Chalean Extreme, Kim lost 25.5 pounds and 28.5 inches!

She’s truly been an inspiration to many (starting her own challenge), including her husband who did the challenge with her and lost over 45 pounds.  Read below to see her story and what she is planning on doing next.

Her Story

My name is Kim, I am a 39 year old full-time wife, mother of 3, and business owner.  Growing up I never had to worry about my weight.  I could eat anything I wanted, never work out and always remained “skinny”.

When I had my first child 21 years ago I gained 65 lbs and within 2 months of his birthday I had lost all 65lbs plus 2 additional lbs.

I always thought that I was just very lucky to have the metabolism that I did.  Over the next few years my body started to “settle” a bit.  I went from 125 lbs to 150 and went from a size 3/5 to a 7/9.

In 1998 I got pregnant with my daughter and gained almost 40 lbs. which topped me off at the heaviest I’ve ever been which was around 190 lbs.  After the birth of my daughter, weight remained.  At this point I thought it was just because there was more stress in my life.

Not true.  Over the next 5, 10, 13 years the weight remained.  I went on a bit of a yo-yo for awhile.  I could diet and drop 10-15 lbs, then stop and it would come right back.  I couldn’t get under 165 no matter what I tried.

I was unhappy that my body was unhealthy, I was tired of my clothes feeling tight.  I got to the point where I refused to buy bigger pants, because if I did – that meant I was gaining more weight .  So instead, I squeezed into clothes that were ultimately too small for my body.

The Challenge

In February of 2012 I received an email from Coach Tony with information about a 90 Day Fitness Challenge.  My husband had gotten an email about a week before with the same information.  I was excited from the moment I read it.

I LOVE a Challenge and  I figured it would be a great way to get both myself and my husband off the couch.  What did we have to lose?  $200?  We spend that on junk food, it was worth a try.

I immediately told Coach Tony I was in, went online and ordered ChaLEAN Extreme and Chocolate Shakeology, set up my myfitnesspal account and started tracking my food.  I was READY to get this started.

I am approaching my 40th Birthday this year and I am tired of being “stuffed” into my clothes and being uncomfortable with myself.

Our Challenge started in March, 2012 and I was hooked from Day 1.  I honestly didn’t think I would sweat as much as I did.  (I don’t know why I would think working  out was “easy” – maybe because I had never really done it before).  At the end of Week 1 – I was down 7.5 lbs.

I was amazed at my results and wanted more.  This made me push harder every week and make the right nutritional choices for my body.  I gave up alcohol completely because I found that I would rather eat those calories than drink them.  I continued to see great results week by week.

Becoming a Coach

I then was so impressed that I became a Beachbody Coach as well.

I started a Challenge Group in April 2012 and my ladies are having amazing results as well.  My mom (who is almost 60) is down 26 lbs in just 2 months.  She is “addicted” to her workouts now too.  She has told me that she cannot believe it took her almost 60 years to figure out how to be healthy.  In May, her and I walked our first 5K together and she is already planning our 2nd.

Get Off the Scale

One of the most common questions I get as a Beachbody Coach:

“I just started working out and I am following the nutrition plan and doing all the workouts and I am gaining weight…what’s going on?”

Now, would you be ok gaining weight if you got results like this?

There are both physiological and mental processes going on and I will explain both, but my quick answer is- GET OFF THE SCALE, keep pushing play and take your 30, 60 and 90 day pictures.

This is a marathon, not a sprint.

We are all at different stages of health when we start our fitness journey–some are looking to spice up their existing workouts and some are trying to get off the couch and get moving again.

Keep in mind, everyone’s body reacts and adapts to different stimuli at different rates.  Where one person might shed tons of fat at first, someone else might start building muscle right away.

Our body needs fuel to perform, so trust in the formula and make sure you eating enough calories per day to help your body make a change.  Contrary to popular belief, reducing calories too low will actually stall your results.

The Physiological Effect

We have to keep the end goal in mind and realize that Beachbody has put together some amazing products and they aren’t 2 or 3 week programs, they are 6090 day programs.  We’ve all heard the saying, “Rome wasn’t built in a day” and neither was/is your body.

Focus on where will you be when you’ve gone through the workout program in its entirety.

Many of these programs are designed to see the most dramatic results in the last phase–so buckle up and enjoy the journey.

It is common when starting an exercise program to see an immediate (and temporary) increase on the scale–this is typically due to the delayed onset of muscle soreness or DOMS.  When we put strain on our muscles through our workouts, we cause microscopic tears in the muscle tissue and our nervous system kicks in to repair our body and keep it functioning at normal levels.

This burn or soreness we feel is a good thing, but as the body takes over to protect the tissue, we often times retain fluid around the slightly swollen/inflamed tissue in order for it to repair.  The fluid retention can result in a temporary weight gain at the beginning of a workout program.

Remember, this can take place whether you experience soreness or not, it’s simply the body reacting to “the shock” of you fatiguing your body.

Have no fear, weight gain when starting a workout program is totally normal and completely temporary.  So keep pushing play and focus on the finish line.

The Psychological Effect

Very often we begin workout programs to lose weight and this is a great motivator, but can also be our biggest hindrance.  We want to see immediate results on the scale and often times we do–both in a positive and negative direction.  The best advice I can give you is to stop focusing on the scale and start focusing on the changes that are happening.

It is a common myth that muscle weight more than fat.  In fact, 1 pound of muscle weighs exactly the same as 1 pound of fat, it just takes up less space because it’s more dense and compact.

Many times we are losing fat while gaining muscle so there will be zero change in what you see on the scale, but actually you are revving up your metabolism to lose more weight by building this muscle.

Why is that you ask?  It takes the more energy for the body to maintain muscle than it does fat.  So the more muscle you build/have, the harder your body works and thus burns more calories and thus you lose more weight.

Keep in mind you don’t have to be a big bodybuilder to build muscle, we can build lean muscle just by doing our workouts and putting the right things into our bodies.

So where do you go from here?  Keep pushing play and TAKE pictures of your progress, I know you are stopping at mirrors all the time to check yourself out, so take out your phone and snap a picture and compare it side by side to others.  This will give you an objective view of how your results are coming along and will allow you to see the changes happening to your body.

Changes that are more important than the number on the scale:

  • Are you clothes looser
  • Do you see changes happening to your body structure
  • Do you feel sore muscles that you didn’t know you had
  • Do you need to pull your belt tighter
  • Do you have more energy
  • Can you get through the workouts better
  • Are you feeling more confident

Coach Tony Checking In

Team Pure Athlete it growing by the day with motivated people who are either trying to help others or trying to help themselves.

Have you joined our exclusive Facebook Group?  If not, request an add here.

We are officially on the last 3 days of our first Challenge Groups and the results are absolutely impressive.  I will be highlighting some of the All-Stars with their stories and results.  These challenges are not just about weight loss, they are about getting healthy and fit and making a lifestyle change.

Why are the Challenge Groups producing such great results?  I believe it’s because folks are given the 3 things they need for ultimate success:

  1. An awesome workout program
  2. Nutrition plan and Shakeology
  3. Support- Daily group support from others doing the same workouts as you

Beachbody CEO Carl Daikeler posted on the blog that over 700,000 people have taken the challenge this year alone–there must be something good going on with these challenges.

Challenges last anywhere from 60-90 days depending on the program you choose.  From our first challenge, we have a many that are posting 10-15 lb weight loss, some 20-25 lbs lost and even got a report today of a 45+ lbs weight loss!  All from pushing play and following the nutrition plan laid out.

Are you ready to start in a Challenge Group?  Team Pure Athlete has 3 new groups starting June 18th:

  • P90x (Men Only- 90 day)
  • Insanity (Co-ed- 60 day)
  • Chalean Extreme (Women only- 90 day)

Spots will fill fast, typically I allow 5-7 people in each group.  Get started now with your Challenge Pack!

It helps with the amount of time I spend answering all your questions and helping you out. Thank you! I really appreciate it!

Nick’s Crazy Results

Nick was the first member of what is now Team Pure Athlete.  I’ve been working with Nick for 8+ years both on and off the basketball court and after deciding that he could get a heck of a workout inside his home–Nick did Insanity and then Insanity Asylum by the book and got awesome results.

He has done several rounds of P90x and dabbled in some other workouts and programs, but it wasn’t until he made some diet modifications that he truly go the results he wanted.

Check out his pictures and his story below.  Way to bring it Nick!

My name is Nick, I am 24 years old and have been working with Tony for the last 8 years. When I met Tony I was 16 years old, 6’5″, 160lbs, and could neither dunk a basketball nor could I bench press 135 lbs. I was skinny, slow, and was told that I had no chance of ever playing college basketball.

Tony believed in me and together we spent countless hours in the gym, on the track, and in the weightroom working to achieve my goal of playing in college. Five years later as a senior in college I was a 4 year varsity player, playing in my second Division III NCAA Torunament and I was 215lbs, could windmill dunk, and bench press 225lbs 22 times (more than many of our football players).

All which I could never have done it without the help of Tony.

Nick's P90x, Insanity, Asylum Results!

Once my basketball career ended I made the same mistake that all my teammates did. I assumed that I could continue eating everything in sight like I had in the past.  Not only that, I thought I could start eating all the junk food that I never ate when I played and stay in game shape.

Instead of spending 4+ hours a day working out like I had for the last 6 years, I spent that time sitting out by the pool. I needed a break right? But it was okay because I was at least geting some physical activity, somebody had to get up and flip the burgers and hot dogs on the grill.

I figured I would get back into shape when college ended.  Reality then sank in when I joined the real world and got a desk job, I sat all day and went from fat and tan, to just fat.

I knew I had to make a change when I was playing on an adult league basketball team that I played with every summer when I was back from college–after only 3 trips up and down the court I was so tired I wanted to sub myself out.

Just as I had before I called Tony up and told him it was time for me to get back in shape.

I was expecting to get back in the gym and on the track but all Tony wanted to talk about was some video and how he was working out in his living room, and I thought he was crazy. I was thinking, “I am sure eight minute abs or whatever is great, but at this point I have about 30 pounds to lose and need to really get serious”.

But Tony was relentless, he kept sending before and after pictures of himself that could have easily been on the hydroxycut commercials that are on TV late at night, and kept telling me that this video workout he was doing was the real deal.

Finally after seeing 235 on the scale I figured what do I have to lose, so I ordered  P90X… and Tony was right– 90 days later I felt great. I had dropped 20 pounds, I could jump again and I could see my abs again.

Just as they had in basketball, my competitive juices started flowing and I started pushing my body to see how ripped I could get. So I did another round of P90X and added some more plyo work, and I was hooked, I was seeing great results and could not wait to finish my next workout to see the next change my body would make.

I wanted to really take things to the next level so I called Tony looking for more, he got me eating better and told me about Insanity and the Insanity Asylum.

I have just finished a 180 day program in which I did all 3 programs back to back to back and have not looked this way since my college basketball years.

I look forward to continuing to strive to get in better shape with the help of Tony and Beachbody…it’s crazy what you can accomplish from home.

Dinner With Tony Horton

As I sat on my Southwest flight from Oakland to LA yesterday, I could only smile and think to myself– “I am doing the right thing with Team Pure Athlete!”

I will expand on that further in this post.

I was returning from an event called Sports Spectacular, a yearly event to raise money for Cedars-Sinai’s Medical Genetics Institute.  This world renowned research and multi-disciplinary outpatient center for the diagnosis, treatment, and management of all forms of hereditary disorders and birth defects affecting fetuses, newborns, children, adolescents and adults brings elite athletes and celebrities together for a great cause.

With David Beckham as the man of the hour, athlete after athlete got on stage to talk about how this organization has impacted their family.  From ex-Raider Todd Christensen talking about his son Teren having spina bifida, to former NBA clutch man Robert Horry telling the story of how his daughter was given 18 years of life because of the advances of this organization–it was a powerful evening.

Me, Tony Horton and my buddy Chris throwing up the X

While all this was going on, I had the pleasure of sitting next to someone who has changed my life over the past 5 years–Tony Horton!

I work out on my television every day with Tony H. and he has not only whipped me into shape with P90x and P90x2, but millions across the globe.

I was excited to say the least when he sat directly next me (thanks to some fine detail work by my buddy Chris) and we instantly started chatting.

We talked about everything from P90x2, to my upcoming nuptials, to who makes a better custom suit:  Vietnam or Italy.  We had an absolute blast sharing stories and talking hoops.

I could write 2,000 words about dinner alone, but what I really want to do is talk about the powerful and lasting impression Tony H. made on me and thousands in attendance.

What you see is what you get with Tony H.  Countless people, including professional athletes, lined up to express their gratitude for all he has done to change their lives.

I witnessed a 20 minute conversation between he and Teren Christensen, who is paralyzed from the waist down due to spina bifida, on how they can put a program together to help get him in shape and moving–bringing a tear to Teren’s eye.  Pretty powerful stuff.

It was truly remarkable not only to see the amount of people in this ballroom that Tony H. had influenced, but how he took time to individually talk to each one of them, hear their story and encourage them to keep pushing play.  His enthusiasm is contagious as adoring fans smiled from ear to ear while making an X for the camera.

You can see the passion in every word that comes out of his mouth and that he truly cares about every single person that has bought one of his P90x DVD sets.

So bringing it back to the the comment I made earlier, “I am doing the right thing with Team Pure Athlete!”

What is “that thing” I am referring to?

Helping people get healthy and fit.  Helping educate people on proper nutrition and the importance of exercise.  Motivating people to do things that they never thought possible.  Helping end the trend of obesity.  Helping re-install confidence and make a difference in people’s lives.

Although Pure Athlete Fitness is new to the Beachbody community, the amount of people it has helped and influenced in 4 months is pretty remarkable.  My goal is to get 1,000 people moving and grooving and making that life change–whether it be to lose weight, get fit or become elite–we are promoting health and fitness and a better way of life.

Although Tony Horton may never read this post, I want to thank him for taking the time to get to know me, to ask questions and to help reinforce that helping others is the most gratifying and rewarding profession there is.  Bring it!

4 Tips to Stay Motivated

You hear this a lot in the media and amongst your peers- “_____  motivates me”

It’s not so important what motivates you, it’s what keeps you motivated that will ultimately get you places and help you reach your goals.

I think we all would agree that there needs to be some motivation to get you through a 60 or 90 day Beachbody Challenge.

When one embarks on a journey, there are a lot of things that can kill your motivation–negativity from others, your loss of passion, lack of immediate success and sometimes life just gets plain gets in the way and we run out of time.

I think it’s important to remember that fitness and health (a lot like life) are not a 90 day Challenge, they are a lifelong commitment to yourself to spend as much time on this earth as possible and to enjoy that time.

My 4 Tips to Stay Motivated

1)  Surround yourself with people that support you and your goals

Anyone who gives you a bad time for not having a beer with them or not going crazy at the Superbowl party with chips and cheese sticks is really all about their own satisfaction.

Why should your friend care if you aren’t eating the same food as them–true friends may give you a bad time, but ultimately will respect you for not giving in and the next time you see them will totally support what you are trying to accomplish.

2)  Tell people what you are doing

Personally, this is my favorite way to plan or stay motivated–I tell people what I am doing so the next time I see them they will ask about it and this will hold me  accountable to actually do it.

I don’t want to sound like a quitter to others, so if I just stay on course I will have a great answer for them.  If it’s a fitness motivation, they usually will know the answer because they’ve seen some changes in my body.

I do this for travel and adventure too.  I tell people I am going somewhere crazy and I don’t want to look like a big talker, so it makes me jump all in to pack my back and head for the airport.

3)  Don’t be afraid to fail

In fact, expect that you will fail–over and over again.  As people this is the only way to learn and get better.  Just think if we all gave up riding the bicycle because we fell off a couple times.

If you can’t do a move, modify it so you can have some success.  Get on your knees to do push ups, use a chair to help you do pull ups–the more you try the better you will get.

The beauty of Beachbody workouts is that you can fail in the privacy of your own home and the only person that will laugh, judge or criticize is–YOU!

Isn’t that a great feeling?   Pick yourself up, keep pushing play and magical things will happen to you.

4)   Set realistic goals and milestones

Many of us quit things because we’ve set ourselves up for failure before we even start.  If you haven’t exercised in years, don’t expect to be able to knock out 50 push ups and 20 pull ups.

You won’t all of a sudden drop 25 lbs in your first week of your challenge or workouts.  This isn’t the Biggest Loser and the results they have are not normal and very unrealistic.

Step out of the moment and think long term (60-90 days) — make daily goals, weekly goals and monthly goals that are out of your comfort zone, but also achievable.

Remember: You will be sore.  You will hurt in places you didn’t know existed.  Tracking your calories will be difficult.  Pushing play every day will be a hurdle.  Do your best, follow your program and nutrition and the results will follow.

Stay plugged into the Team Pure Athlete group on Facebook for support and to interact with like minded people that are having the same struggles as you, have the same questions as you and need the same type of motivation as you do.

Challenge: Getting Started Guide

Challenge Quick Start Guide

You have just made of the best decisions of your life, to make a change for the next 60/90 days that will impact you for years to come.

This will be fun and here is just a guide to get you started.  Please go through all the information and email with any questions

Keep in mind, this will not be easy.  At times, you will want to quit.  At times you will want to go to Burger King and Taco Bell.  It’s only 60/90 days of all out commitment to get in the best shape of your life!

All exercises can be modified and the key is just to do YOUR best to get through each workout and push yourself every day.  Your best effort is all I ask.

Remember, it’s only 60/90 days!  And I doubt anyone one of you will be upset 60/90 days from now after you’ve completed this.

Remember, you are doing this at home, at your own pace and on your own time for the next 60/90 days.

We are connecting on Facebook to hold each accountable and share our thoughts and talk a little mess.

Step 1:  Go Through the nutrition guide and select which phase is best for you.

Step 2:  Take your before pictures
  • Guide to Taking Before Pics:  Pictures are the best way to measure your results, not the scale. /pics

Beachbody offers lots of cash prizes for transformations.  Take as many pics and videos of your progress.

Step 3-  Decide Which Equipment you will need

  • For P90x: the minimum is a pull up bar and dumbbells.  If you don’t want to use either of these, you can also do the workouts with resistance bands.
  • For Insanity:  No Equipment is needed.
  • For Inanity Asylum:  It comes with most equipment, but a pull up bar and dumbbells are recommended
  • For Chalean:  Dumbbells, everything else comes with it
For most programs, a set of dumbbells are recommended to have handy.

Feel free to add more to your workout:  Push Up Stands, Adjustable Dumbbells, Heart Rate Monitor–all are highly recommended but not necessary.  For a full list of products, please go here:

Step 4-  Create and Account with is a Free website that helps you count your calories on a day to day basis.

Make a free account, play around with it and start logging the food you eat (all you do is type in the food and brand and it calculates all the info for you) and see how much you are really eating

Nutrition will be 80% of your results.

After you make a free account, add me as a friend:  pureathletefitness

Here is a good article on how to set it up: Click Here

1)  Manually go in and set your goals depending on what nutrition level you are on (Fat Shredder, Energy Booster, Endurance Maximizer):   HOME >  GOALS  >  UPDATE GOALS MANUALLY

2)  Share your diary with friends, this way you can see what I am eating and I can help you by seeing what you are eating:  SETTINGS >  DIARY SETTINGS  >  SHARE

3)  Do not use myfitnesspal to log your workouts, just nutrition.

Step 5- Start plugging into our group on Facebook

This is where we will hold each other accountable for what we are and aren’t doing.  You have joined a team for next 90 days, time to start working together.

Support is key to making it through this challenge–plug in and get all the guidance and support you need.

Remember, this group is CLOSED.  So only coaches have access to let people in and anything you post there will NOT post to your personal wall/timeline.

Step 6- Buy a small food scale

This might be the most important of all the pieces to the puzzle.

The Biggest Loser digital scale is recommended,  It costs $20 at Bed Bath and Beyond (make sure you bring a BB+B coupon with you!)

Weighing and measuring all your food for the next 60/90 days will give you the best results.

Step 7-  Prepare Food

Clean out your fridge and kitchen of all the junk and make a trip to the store to buy some healthy food!

If you are going to take a 60/90 day journey, might as well make the most of it.  This will be a fun and incredible journey and  I am here to answer all your questions and help you through the process.

Step 8-  Set short term (weekly) and long term (60/90 days) GOALS

Make these goals realistic and attainable.  Remember the Compound Effect, a little bit of work over time leads to exponential gains.

Let’s do it!!!

Step 9-  Add yourself to yourself to the Team Pure Athlete Facebook Group!
